This 3-week class will introduce people to applied social justice theatre and will also serve as an “audition” process for people interested in joining the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble. Learn fun and valuable techniques while you play with us and we get to know each other. Following the class, several participants will be invited to join the Ensemble for the rest of the winter and spring.
A multi-generational (teens to elders), multi-ethnic team now celebrating our 19th season, the ensemble’s focus is on stimulating community dialogue and inviting positive action towards the creation of a more just and joyous world for all people.
We specialize in internationally acclaimed interactive performance and workshop techniques including Theatre of the Oppressed and Playback Theatre. In our improvisational performances, audience members are not passive spectators but active “spect-actors” invited onstage to explore solutions to their own questions and struggles.
Subject matter from previous years’ public performances have included the silencing of youth, racism, poverty, islamaphobia, mental health, elder issues, LGBTQ+/gender issues, domestic violence, drugs & alcohol, hate speech, climate change, gun violence, and war. Inclusive of all opinions, empowering, deeply effective, and fun!
Requirements to join Poetic Justice long-term are:
• A passion for social justice.
• the willingness for honesty and self reflection in a group context.
• the ability to make a consistent weekly commitment to rehearsals every Friday 3:30-6:00 PM through late-May 2020 (standard holidays off) plus an all-day retreat in December.
• Acting experience helpful but not required.
Please call to sign up in advance.
We are particularly seeking to cast teenagers and people of color.
