Old Alcohol Plant: Action/Color Art Exhibit
Friday, November 08, 2019

The three artists in "Action/Color" create artworks that convey a sense of activity with distinctive color palettes and unique imagery. Peter and Stephen utilize various types brushwork and Harold uses layers of collaged photographs. Each artist works in an additive process, constructing pieces by building up layers of information, whether by drawing, painting or pasting-down paper. Color is approached in a variety of ways by the artists - some works blend related colors and some use bold single colors. Harold and Stephen live in Port Townsend and Peter lives in Port Orchard.

About the artists:

Harold Nelson spent 32 years of his life working as a U.S. civil servant, the last 17 years in Washington DC. During that same time, he worked on art in isolation and except for a small photography show in California in 1983 did not exhibit any art to the public. From haunting the numerous art museums all those years in DC area he was able to obtain a self-guided education that has proved invaluable to his development as an artist. It was also serendipitous that just before he retired from his “day job” he met Maryland collage artist George Sakkal. He took a class from George and tried to soak up, in the short time around him, all that George could teach him about his “painting with paper” approach to collage. In 2005 Harold retired from his life in the bureaucracy and moved to Port Townsend, Washington. He, then, was able to spend much more time working on art and submitted pieces to his first juried show in 2008.

Stephen Yates lives and paints in Port Townsend, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. He has an extensive exhibition history, having participated in over 130 group exhibits and more than 30 solo exhibits. He has received several awards including an Artist Trust Fellowship, an Art Matters Award, a National Endowment for the Arts-WESTAF Collectors Project Award and a Centrum Residency.

Stephen’s work is in numerous public and private collections including the Governor’s Office, Olympia, WA; Microsoft Corporation; City of Seattle Collection; City of Portland Collection; Providence Hospital, Everett, WA; Van Andel Institute, Grand Rapids, MI; Kitsap Government Building, Port Orchard, WA; University of Washington-Cascadia Community College, Bothell, WA; Overlake Hospital, Bellevue, WA; Jefferson County Museum of Art & History, Port Townsend, WA; and 14 college and school collections through the Washington State Arts Commission.

Peter Juvonen, a painter for 35 years, is a multi-disciplined artist and nationally recognized for his conceptual abstract style. Representational art does not elude him, but this conceptual style which is uniquely Peter is where his heart is. The palette may change but what is represented is Peter’s “Energy." These shapes are very skillfully designed, connected and controlled. “I love the process, the element of surprise that almost always bring joy to my heart." Peter’s art is included in most major corporate and private collections in the Pacific Northwest, including Microsoft, Boeing, SAFCO at Tacoma Art Museum, Seattle Arts Commission, Hyatt Hotels, Seattle City Light, Swedish Hospital and the Washington State Arts Commission.

We hope you can join us in celebrating these three fine artists.
