In 1853, the young and relatively unknown Johannes Brahms was introduced to Robert and Clara Schumann. He played his own compositions for them and they were completely stunned by the young composer's abilities. Clara, one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century along with Franz Liszt, was so moved that she wrote in her diary that Brahms "seemed as if sent straight from God." Brahms and Clara developed a close bond especially in the later years as her husband's mental health deteriorated. Their letters were often full of deeply personal sentiments and Brahms wrote countless passages of music that served as a testament of his affection for her.
