Dating back to Tchaikovsky's monumental Piano Trio written in honor of his friend and nationally treasured pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, Russian composers have used musical composition as a means of accepting tragedy. Medtner, who Rachmaninoff considered to be the greatest composer of his time, wrote his Forgotten Melodies, Op. 38 after being forced to leave his home following the Russian revolution of 1917.
