Franck Piano Quintet in F minor (1879)
Fauré Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45
The premiere of Franck's explosive Piano Quintet was met with controversy when the older and more conservative French composers denounced it as provocative. In contrast, younger composers such as Fauré and Debussy were drawn to the music's fiery expressive palette that drew parallels with Richard Wagner's colossal operas.
