In May the Port Townsend Gallery features
Stephanie Johnson & Pamela Browning

Pamela Browning creates paper-based multi-media collages which range from those akin to quilt-making
in their precise style and geometric patterns to more improvisational pieces which reveal themselves as
choices about color, edge definition (cut or torn), and placement are made. She began working with
paper when, recovering from breast cancer surgery, she found healing in scouring the color-rich
magazines friends brought and tearing out images of varying texture, pattern and color - creating the
first renditions of her current work. Color has always been Pamela Browning's magical, very best
playmate and is still her greatest love. That love has expressed itself throughout her life. As a teen
growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area's rich, creative environment she sported the “wearable art” of
dramatic, flamboyant clothing. While a student at the University of California at Santa Cruz, she studied
art and modern dance choreography. And as she raised her family in Washington State, she shifted back
to the visual arts - working for decades with clothing, gardens, interior design, fiber work and more
recently, collage. Port Townsend's beauty and its environmental sensibilities contribute to her feeling
more “at home” here than anywhere else she's lived. The environs suit her, e.g. her commitment to
repurposing materials - cast-off magazines, bags, cards, boxes, netting and papers – is echoed and
affirmed in this community.
Stephanie K. Johnson is a classically trained artist and graduate of the Aristides Atelier at the Gage
Academy of Art in Seattle. Her oil paintings invite viewers to experience the glow and mystery of the old
masters. She has traditionally been inspired to use vibrant colors in her pieces. Johnson’s career began at
a very young age. At twelve she entered her first gallery; Artisans on Taylor in Port Townsend, and by
fourteen Stephanie had incorporated her own business. Many say Johnson is "...too young to have such
maturity, yet her skills defy age and time." Stephanie is an artist with the talent to succeed and the
courage to press forward. “With this exhibition, it was my goal to bring the techniques of the Dutch
Masters into a contemporary setting. I desired to capture the feeling of atmosphere and subtleties of light
in each painting; creating a celebration of beauty discovered in our natural world. Whether it is sunlit
Tuscan hills, treasured shells from the ocean or pears from a local garden, everything pays tribute to the
wonder of nature.”

The Port Townsend Gallery at 715 Water Street is open from 10 to 5 Sunday through Thursday,
