Pastel Portrait class- achieving a likeness
Nancy Lucas Williams
Quimper Arts/Masonic Lodge, 1338 Jefferson St., Port Townsend
April 15, 22, 29 1:30 pm-4 pm

I will share with you some of the methods that I use to achieve a likeness in painting portraits with pastels. Our sessions will start with a demo from a live model and an explanation of materials and techniques. Participants will draw from the model for the remainder of each class. We will be working in soft chalk pastel, one of my favorite mediums, because the colors are so vibrant, malleable and fun to work with. No previous experience necessary.

Materials needed:

Upright easel (not necessary but helpful to achieve a likeness)
Drawing board
Pastel paper (preferably lightly sanded, minimum size 12” x 16”)
Chalk pastels
Mahl stick (42” wooden dowl)
Black mirror (4” x 6.5” piece of plexiglass or glass, painted black on one side)
Plumb line (26” heavy black thread with a small weight on the end)

I will have pastel paper available for purchase for anyone who needs it.

Please bring any extra pastels you have and are willing to donate for the duration of the class for those who need them.

Thank you so much! I look forward to sharing my love of people and pastels with all of you.
