Buried and Submerged Forests of the Pacific Northwest

An illustrated presentation by Pat Pringle, Professor Emeritus from Centralia College, will be given on Saturday, October 26th, 4 pm, at First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St. in Port Townsend.

What we know about the Pacific Northwest's post-Ice Age geologic events has grown rapidly in recent decades. Discovery and study of buried and submerged forests - casualties of past catastrophes - have opened doors to new understanding. Also, techniques such as Carbon-14 wiggle matching and dendrochronology (tree-ring dating) now allow more precise dating of the geologic past. These capabilities are revolutionizing our understanding of the history, behavior, and effects of recent geologic volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, major landslides, and regional climate history and its fluctuations.

This talk is free and open to the public; $5 donations are appreciated to defray expenses. The event is sponsored by Quimper Geological Society, an Earth Science affiliate of Jefferson Land Trust. For more information about this group and local geology, visit our http://quimpergeology.org/
