Northwind Arts Center presents Nature: Black and White
From Thursday, April 04, 2019 -  11:30am
To Sunday, April 28, 2019 - 05:00pm

Nature: Black and White - Diane Sarr, Ann Chadwick Reid, Leah Gerrard
Using the dramatic contrast of black and white, Diane Sarr, Ann Chadwick Reid and Leah Gerrard create
imagery inspired by the landscape of the Northwest. Through their work these artists invite viewers to
observe the fragile balance that exists in a landscape threatened by human activity.
Artist Statements:
“Much of my work is influenced by nature that surrounds us here in the Northwest or places I have traveled.
The mere glimpses of nature in black and white propose contrast and conflict of a season that will be left
behind. While the maps give drawings context, they also represent the impact we have on our environment.”

Diane Sarr –
“My work is inspired by the landscape where I live on Samish Island and an interest in environmental
challenges particular to the Northwest. Of most concern is the impact of climate change on this region. The
contrast of the black cut paper on white help create a straightforward coherent image necessary for the
urgency of the message.”
Ann Reid
Ann Chadwick Reid –
“I use steel wire and basketry techniques to create abstract sculpture, striving to inspire emotion and
connection in the viewer through form. When creating a piece, I work towards a lyrical quality encouraging
one to stop and breathe for a moment. My process is slow and meditative, my hope is that process informs
the viewers experience.”
