Northwind Arts Center: The 6th ANNUAL ARTIST SHOWCASE
From Thursday, April 04, 2019 -  11:30am
To Sunday, April 28, 2019 - 05:00pm

Northwind Arts Center, the peninsula’s visual, literary and performance art hub, presents
Alchemy, in the Artist Showcase in April.

Alchemy is defined as “The transformation of matter. A seemingly magical process of
transformation, creation or combination.” Three 2-D artists and one 3-D artist are
spotlighted and each modifies traditional materials to illustrate their artistic vision.
Featured artists for April include Tamera Abate, Suzanne Eller, Jim Ferrara and Kathleen
Secrest.
Tamera Abate works in encaustic painting. “Encaustic painting allows me to create
abstract images with multiple layers of fluid beeswax mixed with damar resin and
pigment. I am particularly drawn to the translucent, thin layers of colored wax and the
movement created with the use of a propane torch.
As the wax and pigments merge the painting begins to manifest. There is a visible
energy that pushes and pulls a painting into its completion.”
Kathleen Secrest sees painting as solving a puzzle. She says that she “makes a mark
and it creates a problem that will need to be solved with the next mark. The next mark
creates a new problem. And so I work until I can find no more problems to solve.” She
collects natural objects and treasures them more than gems. They are the jumping off
point for her abstract art.
James Ferrara, too, states that nature has always been his source of inspiration. “An
idea for a project might simply be sparked by leftover parts and pieces of another work or
a found object.” James works with a wide variety of materials and comments that “though
natures’ art is difficult to improve upon, it is a joy to try.”
Suzanne Eller grew up in the Pacific Northwest and collected treasures from her
adventures on the beaches and in the forest. Her affinity for beach glass, driftwood, rocks
and shells remained into adulthood. The natural world has been the impetus for her self-
taught artistic expression in assemblage art. “Often, a single piece of driftwood or a rusty

tool will spark an image of a fully formed piece in my mind, then transform as I bring other
bits and pieces into the mix.”
The 6th Annual Northwind Arts Center Artist Showcase is a juried art exhibition for Puget
Sound emerging and professional artists of all disciplines. Work from the 24 2-D and 8 3-
D selected artists will be exhibited in the newly remodeled Jeanette Best Gallery

from Scottsdale, Arizona. Bruce, a full-time working artist also has 17 years of experience
as a university art instructor and has been represented in prestigious national galleries,
with more than 25 one-man shows. He has been a gallery owner in the second-largest art
market in America (Santa Fe, NM) and has his work in the permanent collection of over
30 museums.
