The Community Chorus of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County aims to
celebrate the life and music of composer Leonard Bernstein this spring.
Rehearsals begin Sunday, Jan. 13 in preparation for April 5 and 7 concerts.
“Bernstein was a big influence in the world of music in the 20th century
through his composing, conducting and teaching,” said spring chorus
director Leslie Lewis. “In honor of what would have been Bernstein’s
we will sing songs from his concert repertoire, such as his ‘Mass,’ and
‘The Lark,’ as well as beloved tunes from stage and screen, including
selections from ‘Candide’ and ‘West Side Story.’”
Registration for the spring season starts at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13 at
First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St., in Port Townsend. Singing is
6:30-8:30 p.m. Rehearsals continue on Sunday nights thereafter, but usually
at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., in the
fellowship hall. Spring registration closes on Sunday, Jan. 20, at St.
Mary’s. Registration cost is $35.
All singers age 16 and up are welcome, according to the chorus board of
directors. No auditions are required. Men are particularly encouraged to
join; tenors and basses are always needed. One of the charges of the chorus
is to provide an avenue for those who might not have sung since high school
or college to return to music.
