Calling All Young Singers

PT Children's Library Choir Returns: Jan. 8th - March 2nd!

Beginning January 8th, children ages 7 – 12 gather each week at the Port Townsend Public Library to sing favorite songs, from folk and classical to rock, pop, and baroque. The Children's Library Choir is a fun, free music program for local youngsters, directed by Phina Pipia.

"Not only are children able to learn rhythm, rhyme, and vocabulary through the playful nature of music, they are also able to build empathy with the emotional hook that music often provides. The Port Townsend Library is excited to once again host such a fantastic program." says Youth Services Librarian, Hilary Verheggen.

The choir meets 8 consecutive Tuesdays, culminating in a public performance on Saturday, March 2. Participants discover a wide range of music by artists as diverse as Harry Nilsson and Georges Bizet, and sing beloved numbers by Jonathan Richman, Miriam Makeba, Bobby Darin, and Megan Trainor. There are still a few spaces left for young singers, and no prior experience is necessary.

The Port Townsend Children's Library Choir was founded and led for over 10 years by children's librarian Dahti Blanchard, and revived in 2015 by Phina Pipia. The choir has always served as an indispensable arts resource, giving kids the opportunity to make music in a supportive group setting, explore diverse musical genres, and perform annual concerts shared with the community.

Director Phina Pipia sang with the choir as a youngster, and is thrilled to be its current director. "It is an absolute joy to bring this opportunity to local youth," says Pipia, "music was a truly integral part of my childhood, and I'm delighted to give back to the community through this wonderful program."

Phina Pipia is the director of the local theater company, Generation Goat Rocket, which produces theater intensives for Port Townsend youth. She teaches musical theater classes at The Chameleon Theater, performs with the duo The Pipia Sisters, plays tuba with Unexpected Brass Band, and her original musical plays have been performed both nationally and internationally.

From first-time singers to dedicated musicians, youngsters are encouraged to take part in this unforgettable choral experience. An 8-week commitment is required for participation. To secure a child's spot, parents can visit, click on the Calendar tab, click on the choir event on January 8th, and hit "register". For questions, call 360-379-2980.

The Staff at the Port Townsend Public Library, Library Manager and Youth Services Librarian Hilary Verheggen, Library Director Melody Sky Eisler, and Youth Services and Library Associate Jeanne Simmons have been instrumental in making the Children's Library Choir a possibility. Huge thanks to the Friends of the Port Townsend Public Library, whose generous support keeps this program free for local youth.
