Northwind Arts Center presents Artist Showcase 2018 – November 1 – November 25
The Artist Showcase 2018, in its 5th year, features the work of 36 artists from across the Northwest. The Showcase provides a professional exhibit space in which artworks are presented in a curated show that is changed monthly.
Featured Artist of the Month – Wanda Mawhinney
Showcase Artist of the Month for November at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water Street, Port Townsend, WA is Port Ludlow contemporary abstract painter Wanda Mawhinney.
Wanda moved to Port Ludlow from Tucson in 2005. Since relocating she has been active in the local arts scene. Wanda was a member of the Port Townsend Gallery for seven years, managed the Port Ludlow Artists' League Gallery for four years and has been League President for two years. Currently she is Chair of the Exhibit Committee for Northwind Arts Center.
Wanda switched from acrylics to oils a few years ago because she loved the feel of oils and how softly they blend and flow. Her newest passion is using oil and cold wax on board. "Working in a non-objective style creates for me an element of excitement and surprise." says Wanda. "My love of color and texture allows me to create bold compositions. I choose colors, then intuitively allow the painting to evolve, building layers and letting them create their own energy. As I work with this medium, scraping and scratching through many layers, various landscapes seem to be emerging, revealing what lies beneath." Since moving to the Northwest her color palette has shifted from desert Southwest reds, oranges and yellows to cool blues, grays and greens.
Wanda is inspired by the independent spirit of modern abstract artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Richard Diebenkorn. Robert Burridge says, "A painting is never finished, it just stops in interesting places." Those interesting stopping places are what keep her painting, says Wanda, "I'm often amazed and delighted at the final results."
The show runs from November 1st through November 25th.
Opening Reception and Art Walk Saturday, November 3rd, from 5:30-8 p.m.
Exhibit hours are Wednesday through Monday, 11:30 – 5 p.m. Closed Tuesdays.
