Featured Artist of the Month – Leslie Schnick
Showcase Artist of the Month for October at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water Street, Port Townsend, WA is local artist Leslie Schnick.
Over the course of Les' 74 years he has been many things: Peace Corps volunteer, mountain climber, Army enlistee, industrial and exhibit designer, graphic designer and photographer, college adjunct faculty member, boat designer and builder, fisherman, volunteer firefighter and member of an Alaskan mountain rescue group, farmer, board member of the Wooden Boat Foundation and the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, sailor and motorcycle/sidecar enthusiast. Les says that "All of one's life experiences contribute to who we have become and what filters we have acquired through which we view the world and I can certainly see the effects of many of those filters in my art work."
The pieces Les creates are usually sculptural and most are meant to be seen from all sides. Les refers to most of his pieces as being non-objective/abstract, or loosely illustrative. "I often use what materials and found objects, whether from nature or industry, I have on hand. Often it is the essence of those materials, and the forms of the objects, that I'm drawn to and that provide further inspiration for the piece. Sometimes concepts materialize for an upcoming show's theme, or a social/political issue that I'm concerned with. Bringing familiar objects or materials together in unfamiliar ways is another of my motivations. For me it's an adventure…not without difficulties and frustrations along the way. I may start with some sketches, but the hands-on work in the shop/studio has more to do with where the art piece will end up." For more information go towww.leslieschnick.com.
The show runs from October 4th through October 28th.
