Learn Italian in PT!
Planning a trip to Italy, or just fascinated by Italian language and culture?
I'm an experienced Italian language teacher, and I'm preparing four Italian classes to begin at the end of September, right here in Port Townsend.
Language Classes (Saturday Mornings)
Language classes will be focused on everyday practical communication, with lesson plans drawing on student interests in Italian history, art, and travel. We'll use web resources primarily, with a few recommended texts for reference.
Classes will meet for three 10-week terms in Fall, Winter, and Spring. We'll follow the standard two-year college learning sequence—but without all the homework and exams!
Beginning Italian - If you've never studied Italian before, or you've forgotten and want to start over! Everyday phrases, spelling and pronunciation, nouns and gender, present and past tense. The basics for getting around Italy and making yourself understood.
Intermediate Italian - If you're a seasoned traveler and want to deepen your engagement with Italy and Italians. More verbs (future! conditional! subjunctive!), referring and comparing, expressing doubts and wishes, idiomatic phrases and slang.
Cultural Classes (Thursday Evenings)
Guided Conversation - For this informal weekly gathering, I'll prepare short readings on topics in history, culture, travel, and current events, then start the conversation with vocabulary and discussion prompts. Perhaps some Italian food and wine to help things along?
Italian Book Group - We'll meet every other week to read literary texts in Italian! I'll prepare information on the literary context and guide readers through comprehension and interpretation. Students will help choose texts and set the pace. All texts will be available in translation, and discussion will be in English and Italian.
