Mitchel Osborne & Sylvia WhiteIn September the Port Townsend Gallery Presents Mitchel Osborne & Sylvia White

Mitchel Osborne is a photographer specializing in travel, maritime and editorial subjects. He spent the majority of his photography career in New Orleans before moving to Port Townsend in 2006. Mitchel began photographing many local maritime subjects and was captivated by the beauty, workmanship and preservation of boats in this historical setting. Mitchel’s photography displays the marvel of hand crafted boats from the whimsical to schooners to majestic tall ships. Boats in the water compose many patterns and excitement. Mitchel will be featuring photos from past Wooden Boat Festivals. See the rivalry of the schooner races, craftsmanship of a great variety of wooden boats and the forest of boat masts docked at Point Hudson. His photographs display the various interpretations of these in black & white and color printed on archival papers and canvas.

Kelp, Copper and Stainless: Sylvia White's work features an unusual combination of these materials and textures this month. From the basket of beaded stainless steel and copper scrubbers to the large copper whale and the copper firefly, she has used her imagination to create pieces that are humorous and artistic.

White has been a well-known basket maker in California and Washington for the last three decades. In the last ten years she has turned to multi-media sculpture and hanging works. Her specialty has been using recycled materials in her art. She reasons that dried kelp is a kind of recycled material. It can be used to weave metal pieces, or it can be painted and used on its own as a free form sculpture. Several of these painted, free-form sculptures are featured as part of her exhibit.
