Artist Showcase 2018 – July 5 – July 29

The Artist Showcase 2018, in its 5th year, features the work of 36 artists from across the Northwest. The Showcase provides a professional exhibit space in which artworks are presented in a curated show that is changed monthly.

Featured Artist of the Month – Monica Gutierrez-Quarto

Showcase Artist of the Month for July at the Northwind Arts Center is printmaker Monica Gutierrez-Quarto.

Monica earned her BFA at the University of Chile, and for the last 25 years she has been creating prints while participating in exhibitions in Chile and the US.  Monica's aesthetics carry a signature style of ecological storytelling through gestural line-work of rhythm and pattern. "I want my art to represent a world with more hope, trying through art to help heal the soul of people who have lost connection with nature," she says.

Monica's woodcuts are inspired by the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula and its wild and pristine wealth of mountains, forests, beaches and rivers.  Water, an essential element for life and creation, is often used in her prints.  Her goal is to try to capture the soul and essence of the landscapes using a limited color palette contrasted with sharp black ink and white spaces.

Monica likes the process of dialogue with the wood-printing block that is produced when she is carving and discovers new textures that will give more rhythm and movement to the printed work.  "The movement of my hands when using the tools in my carving technique reminds me of my own feeling of symbolic and intimate connection with the flow and rhythmic movement of water in motion."
