She wrote the perfect love story, one letter at a time. An adaptation of the 1912 novel of the same name by Jean Webster, Daddy Long Legs is the latest of many stage and film adaptations, and the most true to the original work. Written in 2007 with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and book by John Caird, Daddy Long Legs is a two person epistolary musical about a young orphan girl and her mysterious benefactor who empowers her through providing her with a college education. KCPT is opening the first west coast production of Daddy Long Legs since the closing of its successful off Broadway run in 2016.
Daddy Long Legs is a heartwarming Cinderella story about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor. Jerusha Abbott is the oldest orphan in the John Grier Home for Orphan Children, during one the visits of the trustees of the home, Jerusha spots the long, spindly shadow of a trustee, cast in the headlights of his car. She is given a letter from the trustee, outlining his anonymous gift, a fully funded nine-point plan for her education, under the condition that she will write to him, reporting on her progress, with no expectation that her letters would be answered. With only the image of his silhouette in the distance, she dubs him Daddy Long Legs. Upon reading her first letter, young philanthropist Jervis Pendleton is bemused by her assumptions of him. Through this constrained communication, love blooms between the two.
Daddy Long Legs stars Vince Wingerter in his KCPT debut as Jervis. Vince is a Tacoma native who toured with the national production of Mamma Mia!. Port Townsend native Christa Holbrook, last seen as the mysterious narrator in 2017's Kitsap Sun Best Musical Award winner, Murder Ballad, is Jerusha.
