Port Townsend High School drama students will open their spring production of "As You Like It" by William Shakespeare on Friday, May 4th @ 7 pm. For this production director Jennifer Nielsen has set the play in the American West of the 1800's. In addition, she has added several 1950's Western and Pop songs to enrich the story and enhance the production. The songs have been cleverly adapted by Linda Dowdell who will also be the accompanist for the show and is joined by Clover Coupe-Carlin on percussion. Songs include "Hey, Good Lookin'", "Come Go With Me" and "Dream Lover", among others.
Angela Gyruko is the dance choreographer with fight choreography by Tomoki Sage.
The set was designed by Nielsen with construction by Jim Guthrie and students in the cast and crew. Steve Arbuckle designed the lights and Angela Agnew designed the hair and make-up.
The cast features Cece Nielsen as Rosalind, Galia Roman as Celia, Bodie Labrie as Orlando and Finn O'Donnell as Oliver. Also contributing their many talents on stage, off stage and in the band are Katherine Eldridge, Odin Smith, Nylah Garling, Pierre Balou, Sorina Johnson, Cyan Adams, Violet Moell, Brooke Hageman, and Zinnia Hansen.
In the past 15 years, Nielsen has directed over 30 productions at PTHS, including absurdist one-acts, major musicals, Greek dramas and contemporary comedies. "As You Like It" will be her last show. With her youngest daughter graduating and going off to college, Nielsen is ready for a new adventure. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of the talented students over the years," she explained. "It's been a good ride." She would also like to thank all of the community members who have volunteered their time and talents to make the shows stunning and memorable.
This show will play on May 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th @ 7:00 pm and Sunday, May 13th at 2:30 in the PTHS auditorium. Admission prices, which have not changed in the 15 years Nielsen has been in charge, are $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for senior citizens and students, and $3.00 for children under 12. This show is 2-1/2 hours long with one intermission. All proceeds will fund future productions at PTHS.
