Artist Showcase 2018 - May 3 – May 27
The Artist Showcase 2018, in its 5th year, features the work of 36 artists from across the Northwest. The Showcase provides a professional exhibit space in which artworks are presented in a curated show that is changed monthly.
Featured Artist of the Month – Carla O'Connor
Carla O'Connor holds a BFA from Kent State University and is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and Northwest Watercolor Society and an AWS Dolphin Fellow. She has taught workshops across the US and abroad and her DVD "The Process – Figure Design in Gouache" is available on her website www.carlaoconnor.com.
The human form has been the touchstone of her art according to Carla. "I strive to combine the three dimensional figurative form with the two dimensional abstract surround. There is usually a seed of an idea or a bit of a plan when I begin, but I am mostly directed by the work as it progresses. It is a dialogue, a give and take, of sorting puzzles, discovering solutions and trying to stay in the process as long as possible."
Carla works with gouache and watercolor in layers of thick and thin color, lifting and layering the surface with lines, unique shapes, varied textures, and strong contrasts within a thoughtful composition. Her work addresses the passage of time and the human response to the internal and external events that change and shape our lives.
The Showcase is a juried exhibit running for 9 months. This year juror Ned Mueller selected 36 artists from a field of 78 submissions. The Showcase contains original, innovative work including 3D as well as 2D works representing artists from the Olympic Peninsula, Vashon Island, Whidbey Island, Bainbridge Island, Gig Harbor and Bellingham.
The show runs from May 3rd through May 27th. Exhibit hours are Wednesday - Monday, 11:30am-5:30pm
