Fold, Tear, Print—How does your paper perform?
Paper is fundamental to book arts and fine printing. What have you been using? Does it fold the way you want it to? Tear cleanly? Cut smoothly? How’s the ink coverage? The Northwind Book Arts Group is holding a brief talk followed by Q&A and a hands-on presentation with samples. The NBAG Fall Meeting will be held September 11, 7:00 PM in Port Townsend at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water Street.
Coleen Zanovitch, the Seattle sales representative for Spicers Paper will take the mystery out of ordering and availability. Then, we’ll take sample sheets, fold them, crease them, crinkle them, and tear them. For the printers among us, we’ll have some ink, a brayer, and a small press.
Coleen Zanovitch took her degree in journalism seriously; she went directly into the paper business. (After all, where would traditional journalism ever have been without something to print the news on?) She started out in the sample department at Unisource in Portland, making mockups for printers and designers. Then Spicers lured her away and eventually moved her to Seattle where she continued in the samples department until recently when she stepped into sales.
Somewhere, in all of this, she worked in customer service and began spreading paper knowledge through a series she called Lunch and Learns. In her words, “I get to talk paper every day and see people’s projects.” She enjoys helping creatives.
If you’ve ever worked with products from Strathmore, Crane’s, Neenah, or Mohawk, you’ve entered Coleen’s world. She will come prepared to talk specifics and answer questions.
The Northwind Book Arts Group is dedicated to exploring and cultivating contemporary aesthetic interpretations of the book as art, while preserving the traditional practices involved in the creations of books and providing a forum for exchange among fine printers, typographers, binders and artists in and around Port Townsend and the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. Open to all with an interest in artist’s books, fine printing and paper. More information available from email@example.com. http://northwindarts.org/programs/northwind-book-arts-group/
