ALPS: Compassionate Listening In Times Of Conflict
Thursday, October 12, 2017, 07:15pm - 09:15pm

Facilitator: Sarah Zale

Compassionate Listening® (www.compassionatelistening.org) is the practice of listening and speaking from the heart – even in the heat of conflict. It awakens us to what the mystics from all of the great faiths have known for centuries: that cultivating the wisdom of the heart is the key to real peace from the inside out. Compassionate Listening teaches us how to reach through layers of defensiveness and reactivity to our essential core. From there, we can shift communication and relationships into heart-to-heart interaction. Participants learn powerful skills for peace-making, starting with peace within ourselves, and then with family and our communities, in the workplace and beyond.

Participants learn about Restorative Circles, a process based on Dominic Barter's work. The circle supports those in conflict by bringing together the three parties—those who have acted, those directly impacted, and the wider community—to dialogue as equals.

Course materials: printing of workbook, and I encourage buying a book on Compassionate Listening (but not required), $15.

Sarah (360-460-8589 or sarahzpeace@gmail.com) first became involved with Compassionate Listening®, an organization based in Indianola (WA), when she traveled with its founder, Leah Green, on a peace delegation to Israel and Palestine in 2006. She is now a certified facilitator, as well as a facilitator of (Pedagogy and) Theatre of the Oppressed. Additional work includes ongoing training with Susan Partnow, co-founder of Seattle Restorative Justice and senior facilitator of Compassionate Listening.
