Veteran's Day Program for Monday, November 11 in Jefferson County.
At the American Legion, Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post #26, 209 Monroe Street in Port Townsend, a patriotic concert by the Port Townsend Summer Band will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Post Ceremony at 11 a.m. Quilts of Valor will present 20 handmade quilts to local veterans. A pot luck will follow the ceremonies.
The Medal of Honor is America's highest military decoration. Shields, Port Townsend High School Class of 1958, became the first member of the U.S. Navy to earn the Medal of Honor after his combat death during the Vietnam War. He is the only Seabee to be awarded the honor.
Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
Port Townsend Summer Band has provided Free Concerts to our community for more than 26 years.
We are all volunteers who love sharing music with all who wish to listen.
