In April the Port Townsend Gallery features Nancy Fredrick & Phil Carrico
Nancy Fredrick has been painting and drawing landscapes for the last 45 years. She studied art at Cabrillo College and the University of California. Before moving to Port Townsend almost 12 years ago she had a studio in the Santa Cruz Mountains on land owned by The Big Creek Timber Company. She was able to get to know that special place through many hikes and drawings and paintings done in the landscape. During Art Walk Nancy will be showing a selection of her favorite landscapes. Some of them are from the Port Townsend area; others are from travels on the Coast between Big Sur and the Olympic Peninsula. When unable by the weather to paint en plein air she will work from sketches and photos in the studio. She likes to draw in pencil, charcoal, pen and ink. Her paintings are in watercolor, acrylic and oil. In addition, she also makes mono types and mono prints using an etching press.
As a printmaker, Phil Carrico relies on his surroundings to give him inspirations for his works. After living in Alaska for 38 years, the mountains have always inspired the beauty for his woodcuts. In Port Townsend, he found the stimulus he needed in the Olympic Mountains as well as such structures as lighthouses and sea life. Phil taught art in Fairbanks for 20 years and once he retired he returned to the University of Alaska and completed his Masters of Fine Art in Printmaking. Being able to breathe life into wood is his passion and hopefully will keep this ancient art form alive. The process is very intricate and complex. He recently hung a step by step presentation in the gallery to visualize the time and creativity involved in each original print. During Art Walk, view "Moonstruck " a thirteen color original reduction woodcut print and "My Little Chicadee" a nine color original reduction woodcut print. He is now working on a 15 color reduction woodcut print of an octopus.
