Annual Port Townsend Chili Cook-Off and Horseshoe Contest
Sunday, June 04, 2017, 12:30pm

It's Chili Cookin' Time, y'all!! Can't you just smell the roasting poblanos and guajillos? Hear the sizzle of the meat as it gets a nice brown glaze on it?

Get ready to fire up your stove and start cookin' because it's time to see who makes the best chili and cornbread in all these parts.

The Annual Chili Cook-Off takes place on Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The gates open at 12:30 pm, the horseshoe competition begins at 1 pm and the judging starts at 3 pm. The chili categories include mild, hot, family-style (with beans &/or veggies) and verde. All competition chilies and cornbreads must be registered before the judging begins. The team of judges consists of the 2014 winners. After intense scrutiny by their expert palates, they will choose the best chili in each of the categories and will then select one of these as the Best Overall Chili. The creator of the championship chili will have their name engraved on the Cook-Off Trophy, created by Bob McGarrough.

There will once again be music. Picnic tables will be provided and a fire-pit with grill will be set up to keep your chilies and cornbreads warm.

This is a community picnic so be sure to bring your lunch, beverages and table settings. Health Department regulations prevent us from offering chili to the general public. Glass containers and dogs are discouraged.

For more information, or to try to bribe these three for their winning chili recipes, call Ron McElroy (385-2556), Larry Dennison (301-0120) or Pete Raab (774-1219).
